![]() ![]() Sadly, we caught a foot to the face and lost our rings before the ice attack arrived. We launched the ball of white - triangle controls your power-ups - and headed off to wail on our incapacitated foe. Starting on opposite sides of a multi-level battlefield, we took Sonic straight to the ground floor and snagged an icy power-up. Of course, it's never that simple - as we found out this morning as Sonic and Knuckles faced off. ![]() To pull off the feat, a player must cause the opponent to lose all of his or her rings - which can be recollected - and then deliver the killing blow while the ring supply is exhausted. Each character starts with three rings and the objective of knocking the other player out. Basically, it's a best three out of five boxing match with power-ups and traditional Sonic style. However, the game we've been playing the most is Knockout. To win Laps Race, a player has to be the first to complete a set number of trips around a course a winner in Ring Battle is the player who has the most rings when time expires win King of the Hill by staying in the goal zone long enough to rake in the preset point total and Tag has you and a foe passing a bomb back and forth via a game of - surprise - tag. Capture the Chao has you and a rival racing to each other's base to steal the other's creature and get it back to your own base to win. Sonic Rivals 2 includes six new battle modes that are woven into the story mode. But that's not the only chance you'll have to stomp some of Sonic's rogues gallery. Circle doubles as an attack button and a homing attack button so that characters can cream one another as the contests get up close and personal. If we were able to stick to the same path as our opponent, Tails could perform a kick that would not only yield his competition's rings but also his or her spot in the race. The fox fell to a lower section of the level, smashed through a crate and was fired through a maze of underground pipes that kept us on pace - although not on the same plane - with our foe. As we tore along a treetop track, Tails scooped up rings and power-ups but missed a launching pad when we didn't tap X quickly enough. This morning I took Sonic's faithful companion Tails up against Espio the Chameleon in a battle of the fleet tailed versus the fleet footed. If you missed a jump or fell from a platform in the original Rivals, your fast-paced action came to a screeching halt as you tried to get back into the race. Yes, the frantic 2D races, pitfalls and items are intact in Sonic's story mode, but now SEGA has added in alternate routes to keep the fun going. However, Rivals 2 appears to have tossed in enough change to bring even the casual fan of the original back to the table. Basically, it's an evolved version of Sonic on the Genesis. If you missed the first installment in this PSP Sonic series, the game puts you in the soon-to-be worn out shoes of your favorite speedster - from day one, you'll have access to eight characters such as Knuckles, Shadow and Metal Sonic - and has you race opponents through levels filled with boxes, monsters and insane ramps on your way to besting your opponent, setting a record, unlocking collectable cards and going toe-to-to with Eggman. The cards also unlock the Cup Circuits, and Chao Detectors for the Zones.Luckily, Sonic and a plethora of his pals are ready to combat this latest wave of terror through races and fistfights in Sonic Rivals 2. Unlike the first game, only one card is needed to unlock a suit and each character has four suits instead of the original three. ![]() The cards themselves contain art from various older Sonic games, and can unlock things such as alternate suits for the characters. For example, getting an S Rank in Knockout Mode unlocks a card of Mephiles the Dark. There are 150 different cards to collect, and each is tied to a certain achievement. Races and battle can be customized in every aspect, and players can try to earn cards by completing challenges. In addition, players can also try the Cup Circuit and Single Event modes. This is a first for many of the characters featured. They can also try Time Attacking, or finding the ten hidden Chao in the levels. In this single player mode, players can choose any one of the eight characters and play through the zones in traditional 2D Sonic fashion. The game introduces a new mode called Free Play. The characters are divided into four teams, each of which has their own story. Each zone has three acts and a boss, with the exception of the final zone. Players go through each of the game's battle modes and levels to advance the plot. Story Mode is the main single player mode. ![]() Sonic Rivals 2 has four main Single Player modes. ![]()
